Quick Notes: Million Dollar Spaghetti is hardly an original recipe. It’s all over the internet. I’ve made this one my own with a little more of the ingredients I love. This could easily be made meatless, or with a meat substitute. I don’t know if this is where this recipe actually originated, but this is the first one I remember seeing, so I’m crediting here: https://www.spendwithpennies.com/million-dollar-spaghetti-casserole/
Ingredients
- 1 lb spaghetti noodles
- 2 24 oz jars of your favorite pasta sauce
- 1 lb ground beef (or sausage)
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 2 tablespoons minced garlic
- 12 oz cottage cheese
- 8 oz (1 package cream cheese) softened
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella
- 1 cup shredded Parmesan
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350.
- In a large pot, boil water and cook pasta according to packaging instructions. Salt the water to give it more of an "Italian" flavor.
- In a large skillet, start meat over medium-high heat. Once it gets hot enough to provide a little grease, add onions and garlic. Cook meat until it's well done. If there is a lot of excess grease, drain. Add one jar of pasta sauce to the meat.
- Meanwhile, add softened cream cheese, sour cream, and cottage cheese to a large bowl and stir until fully mixed.
- Drain pasta, and return to pot. Pour over the other jar of pasta sauce and mix until the noodles are fully covered.
- Pour noodles into a 9" x 13" baking pan. Top with the cheese/sour cream mixture. At this point, I like to use a pasta spoon to work the cheese mixture into the noodles a little bit. A lot of recipes advise you to leave this as its own layer....I'm not a fan of that, preferring the noodle-y mixture to be a little more cohesive after baking, and I think this provides that effect.
- Take the beef/sauce mixture and pour it over the top of the noodles. Smooth the sauce until it has fully covered the noodles.
- Use all your shredded cheese and fully cover the top, so you have melty deliciousness once baked.
- Put your now 500-pound casserole into the oven and bake for 30 minutes. If you wanna get kinda cray, you can totally switch it to broil and brown the cheese a little at the very end, but be super-duper careful or you'll burn the hell out of this and that's going to be disappointing.
- Let sit for 15-20 minutes before serving because this shit is going to be lava.
